Cancellara joins Hard Training Camp before the Tour de France

Giro d'Italia looks rather interesting in the top of the overall classement after the unconventional 61 km long mountain/combi Time Trial.

Yesterday I was surprised to see Fabian Cancellara in the front of the peloton and use a lot of energy because the Time Trial today had been the best chance for Team Saxo Bank to get a stage victory. I thought that specific Time Trial was one of Fabian Cancellaras goals for the Giro 2009.

But then he leaved the Giro caravan to join many other top riders from Saxo Bank for a percussion hard cycling training camp in the Alps before the Tour de France.

I would love to see Cancellara go at full speed at that Time Trial but him leaving the Giro is still acceptable I think!

Many don't understand the disposition the proffesional sometimes make, but as I always try to explain to you and others, it is important to have a short and a long-term objective. An objective and training plan is good to have in place, but as in Cancellaras case you must be ready to change your goals and plans when things dont go as planed in the first place. I believe it has been Saxo Bank's plan to withdraw Cancellara from the Giro from day one.

A friend of mine believes that the year 2009 and Tour de France in particular will be the worst season so far for the Team CSC/Saxo Bank so far. But I think that they will have very great success in the tour actually. Winning the Tour is always difficult, especially when Astana has Alberto Contador as a clear favorite to take the victory, but I think Andy Schleck will end ind top 3 already this year!

That will be an acceptable result for the Team Saxo Bank as we all know that Andy has aged with them. Andy will take more than one victory in the Tour in the years to come I am quite sure.

Riders I have noted will participate in the Team Saxo Bank hard cycling training camp in the Alps are:

  • Frank Schleck
  • Andy Schleck
  • Fabian Cancellara
  • Chris Anker
  • Nicki Sorensen

But I think Kurt-Asle Arvesen and/or Alexandr Kolobnev is going as well.
