This article contains advice based on thousands of hours of training on the bicycle in the dark. The advices are given to you to ensure optimum safety and does not always match local laws and regulations.

Training in the dark is a matter of two things:

  • You must be able to see where you bicycle
  • You must be seen by others

Combined one or more lamps meet your needs for headlamps with different strengths. Many of the newer lamps have several levels of intensity known as LED lamps. LED lamps uses very little power and can both light constantly and blink for more attention. Therefore Bulbs are almost perfect as bike lights.

The following recommendation is given for general use of lights and placement of reflectors:

  • Low light to normal bicycling
  • Strong light to see where the road is poorly lit and ypur headlamp pointing slightly down on the road
  • Strong light should point to oncoming cars for more attention
  • Rear light must be obliquely, and pointing straight back, preferably also be viewed from the sides
  • At least one of your front and tail lights should be flashing lights to give you more attention in the dark
  • A white reflective strips on a large scale must be placed at the head tube
  • Red reflective strips in large scale must be available at the rear fender
  • White reflective tape should apear on your shoe covers and at the bottom of the jacket
  • 2 x orange reflectors on each wheel should be mounted in the spokes
  • Reflective tape on the tire side is not recommended as snow and dirt covering it all up.
  • Remember that your life depends on your choices!

NOTE. A front wheel with a dynamo built into the hub would make you able to light up half the kingdom!
